Lesson 2: Live performance with a DAW


Step 0: Who uses DAWS for their performances? (10m)

Jacob Collier with the assistance of multiple looping stations and the assistance of an incredible team, is able to put on an astounding one person show with an array of extraordinary instruments.

Watch the video and discuss these questions with your group:

  1. How does looping benefit the performance

  2. Are all instruments looped or are some pre-recorded?

  3. Describe the layers used in the song

  4. Identify the instruments used

Step 1: Create a new composition (10m)

Using the method from lesson 1, create a new composition using:

  1. Looped instruments (that aren’t the instruments you are going to play in your group)

  2. Verse and Chorus section

  3. 1 minuet performance

  4. Transition effect

Step 3: Practice with your group (10m)

Split your group into instruments (someone also needs to play the app)

  • Melodic instrument

  • Harmonic instrument

  • Rhythmic instrument

  • Ipad

  • Music director

You only need to perform with the 2 created sections

Step 4: Live stream audio (10m)

The teacher will set up an audio live streaming Zoom session in the music room

  1. Log onto Zoom and join with teacher link and code

  2. Add to the word cloud describing the performance using lesson 1’s words
